Stern battles for start spot |
|
Striker Stern John is likely now to break into the Southampton starting team after an injury to regular first pick forward Bradley Wright-Phillips. John, has been used off the bench by manager George Burley since arriving from Sunderland and has had a no so easy time as Grzgeorz Rasiak and Phillips had been doing well up front since the start of the season. But now John could force himself in with fellow striker Marek Saganowski also competing for the spot. Wright-Phillips
limped off with a hamstring strain against Sheffield United previously but
Burley still opted for Saganowski in Tuesday’s 5-1 thrashing from Preston
North End. John came on in the 74th minute. The latter though is likely to
get the nod against West Brom on Saturday.“We've got good healthy competition. Unfortunately, Bradley is going to be out for around three weeks, which is a big blow for us, but we've got Marek and Stern competing for places along with Grzegorz, so we're certainly covered in that position. "Bradley was looking fitter this season, very fresh, lively and had been in the starting line-up quite a lot,” Burley said.
